Listening Space for Me
The listening space at A Museum for Me is a place to stop and listen, a chance to hear and reflect on the personal testimony of refugees and exiles from conflict, in their own words. These generous acts of sharing help bring listeners closer to acknowledgement and knowledge, if not understanding, of the lived experience of another, and of the shared and disparate contexts we inhabit; the truths that are communicated here not only re-construct historical memory, but lend us the privilege of witnessing to the humanity of those who are changing the present and future, as they affirm their commitment to build peace with truth and justice.

Una verdad sin fronteras’ es un podcast de once episodios en el que se entablan conversaciones con víctimas del conflicto armado colombiano en el exterior, colectivos de colombianos organizados en México, y organizaciones de la sociedad civil que tienen trabajo con población migrante, refugiada y solicitante de refugio. Estas conversaciones se han dado gracias a la participación y diálogo social que ha generado proceso de esclarecimiento de la verdad en Colombia y el exterior.

Somos un grupo de colombianas exiliadas en Londres que queremos romper el silencio, contenido durante más de 3 décadas, y que estamos comprometidos con La Paz de nuestro país.
Nada de esto ha sido fácil, los niveles de desconfianza con las instituciones y el miedo que hemos arrastrado durante tantos años de conflicto armado en nuestro país, siguen latente en nosotros y más cuando la historia de asesinatos, persecuciones y desapariciones continúan en nuestro País.
Queremos unir nuestras voces y fuerzas a los miles de compatriotas en Colombia que han tenido el coraje y la valentía de luchar por hablar la verdad y por la defensa de la Paz para nuestro país.
Hoy ratificamos nuestro compromiso y apoyo para con la Comisión de la Verdad, esperanzados que los derechos básicos de las Victimas como son la justicia, la verdad y las garantías de no repetición, sean una realidad para la construcción de un país en paz.
We are a group of Colombian women exiles in London who want to break the silence of the last 30 years, and show our commitment to Peace in our country.
No part of this process is easy: the mistrust of institutions, and the fear that has overshadowed us during so many years of armed conflict in our country, remain with us still; not least because the killings, persecutions and disappearances continue in our country.
We want to join our voices and efforts with those thousands of fellow citizens in Colombia, who have bravely struggled to stand up and speak the truth, and defend Peace in our country.
Today we affirm our commitment to, and support for, the Colombian Truth Commission, with a renewed hope that the fundamental rights of Victims – the right to justice, to truth, and no repetition of past crimes – can become a reality, and we can build a country that lives in peace.

Este testimonio anónimo, dirigido tanto a la Comisión de la Verdad, como al público en general, se hace uso de los objetos cotidianos para comunicar, de forma elocuente y conmovedor, lo que significan exilio y memoria para quienes han tenido que abandonar su patria u hogar, y por qué es imprescindible un proceso de esclarecimiento y reconocimiento de la verdad, para honrar las vidas e historias de sus seres queridos detenidos y desaparecidos (video en español).
In this moving, anonymised testimony, personal objects are used by an exile to explain to the Colombian Truth Commission and wider audiences the meaning of exile, the significance of memory to those forced to flee their homes, and the need for processes of truthful clarification and recognition, which honour the lives and stories of detained and disappeared loved ones (video in Spanish).

The Colombian Truth Commission is one of the first in the world to work beyond national borders, recognising the huge number of Colombians who were forced to leave the country due to the armed conflict. To facilitate the participation of Colombian exiles, migrants and refugees, the Commission has created hubs of volunteers who are supporting the gathering of testimonies. This film by the UK and Ireland hub is a short preview of stories around exile from Colombians in London. La Colectiva (The Collective) is a group of refugees, exiles and migrants based in Spain. We have been working together for many years, supporting one another and strengthening our resilience and mental well-being. We use different art-forms to communicate our past experiences and sufferings, but also share our capacity to enjoy life and face the future together with optimism, in sisterhood, taking a feminist perspective, among others, on life and the world around us.
Las Refugiadas, Exiliadas y Migradas de La Colectiva hemos venido desde hace años trabajando en nuestro acompañamiento psicosocial con resiliencia, sanación y el trabajo conjunto para expresarnos a través del arte y transmitir nuestros dolores, experiencias, formas de asumir la vida con alegría, sororidad y como feministas, entre otros de nuestras concepciones del mundo y de la vida.

Es defensora de derechos humanos en clave de mujeres y activista por la paz. Es miembra de la Colectiva de Mujeres Refugiadas Exiliadas y Migradas y del Foro Internacional de Víctimas.

Sonia, para ti ¿qué significa el concepto de exilio?
El exilio es el hecho de encontrarse lejos de su país, debido a la expatriación voluntaria o forzada.
En el caso mío y el de mi compañero, nos vimos forzados a pedir Refugio Político en Inglaterra debido a un atentado contra nuestras vidas, el primero de abril de 1988, cuando sicarios nos dispararon en el vehículo en el que viajábamos, dejando a mi compañero herido de gravedad. Lo que le ocasiona problemas de movilidad. Yo me esperando un bebe con cuatro meses. El cual perdí a las pocas semanas de haber ocurrido el atentado.
Y, ¿qué significan reconocimiento, y esclarecimiento de la verdad?
Es muy importante porque es la forma de lograr la sanación por el dolor causado. Considero que en nuestro caso hubo un reconocimiento muy importante por parte de muchas personas y organizaciones defensoras de los derechos humanos. Nuestro principal apoyo fue Amnistía Internacional en Londres. El Esclarecimiento de la Verdad se ha dado en parte en diferentes instancias. Una de ellas fue El Comité de Derechos Humanos de las Naciones Unidas en Ginebra-Suiza.

Escucho como pisan las hojas secas del campo.
Hay que correr, hay que salir, hay que alejarse,
Hay que cruzar el río, corramos…
Pero mira el río, esta teñido de rojo…
Entonces por aquí también pasan las botas.
Ellas, las botas, hay que esconderse, pero dónde?
Dónde no hay botas?
Tal vez al otro lado del río.
Quizás no hayan botas, pero sí hay zapatos,

Colombian Truth Commission reaches out to UK and international audiences
A clear and engaging insight into the work of the Colombian Commission for the Clarification of Truth, Co-Existence and Non-Repetition. In this special interview for A Museum for Me, Peter Drury, Representative of the Colombian Truth Commission in the UK, speaks to Dr Lucia Brandi about the Commission’s objectives in Colombia and among the diaspora of exiles, including here in the UK.

Peter Drury is a human rights researcher and campaigner; much of his research work over many years has focused on Colombia. He worked in the Colombia Research Team of Amnesty International for over twenty years, carrying out much work on corporate responsibility issues amongst other topics. He has also worked for Oxfam, Global Witness, and as a Peace Brigades International volunteer in Colombia. Currently, he is the representative of the Colombian Commission for the Clarification of Truth, Co-Existence and Non-Repetition in the UK.
